Oil Technology covers vegetable/animal oils and, depending on programme context, industrial/petroleum-derived oils through extraction, refining, fractionation, hydrogenation, blending, analysis and product quality. PIML can connect phase, reaction and transport models to processing data.
The oil type and end use must be stated explicitly. Edible oils, lubricants and petroleum fractions have different safety, chemistry and standards; one generic model cannot represent them all.
This page presents ten focused research areas, degree-level project pathways, selected publications and direct support through the PIMLS biweekly members meeting.
This Oil Technology guide covers Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs), physics-guided machine learning, scientific machine learning, neural operators, hybrid models and engineering digital twins. Explore the research and project pathways below, then join the Physics-Informed Machine Learning Society to connect with the international PIMLS community.
Use available scientific knowledge to make limited data more useful, transparent and testable.
PIML can reduce repeated simulation or experimental cost while retaining the governing knowledge used in Oil Technology.
Learn uncertain parameters, closures or discrepancies around an inspectable mechanistic foundation.
Test whether structured models generalize across geometries, materials, assets, operating regimes or sites.
Use physical residuals, independent measurements, uncertainty and conventional engineering baselines before deployment.
Each card connects a meaningful Oil Technology question with suitable scientific knowledge, modelling choices and evidence needed to test it.
Mass transfer and mechanics determine yield. PIML opportunities: Use feedstock-aware process hybrids.
Phase and heat balances govern separation. PIML opportunities: Use conservative safety constraints.
Chemistry removes phospholipids/acids. PIML opportunities: Use reaction/separation models with assays.
Surface interactions remove colour/impurities. PIML opportunities: Infer kinetics/equilibria under mass balance.
Steam/vacuum transport removes volatiles. PIML opportunities: Use thermodynamic process twins.
Crystallization and phase equilibria separate fractions. PIML opportunities: Model cooling and composition history.
Reaction changes functionality. PIML opportunities: Use kinetic hybrids and product assays.
Components determine viscosity/stability. PIML opportunities: Use physical mixture models and constraints.
Heat, oxygen and metals cause rancidity/degradation. PIML opportunities: Use reaction–transport life models.
Viscosity and additives affect friction/wear. PIML opportunities: Use rheology/tribology tests.

Request accessNo. Oil Technology projects may use physics-guided features, hybrid residual models, differentiable simulators, neural operators, constrained architectures or data assimilation. State exactly what knowledge is incorporated.
Choose one engineering question, a measurable output and a defensible mechanistic baseline. Add learning only where data can identify an uncertainty or discrepancy.
A meaningful question, justified prior knowledge, deployment-level holdouts, strong baselines, ablation, uncertainty, reproducibility and honest limitations.
Simulation can broaden coverage, but simulation-only evidence cannot establish real-system accuracy. Use calibrated experiments, field measurements or trusted independent references appropriate to the claim.
