Computer Technology focuses on practical computer hardware, operating systems, networking, embedded devices, software support and system integration. Its PIML role is to move physically grounded inference from laboratory notebooks into robust devices and technical services.
The branch should emphasize implementation evidence: sensor interfaces, numerical precision, resource limits, latency, reliability, security and maintenance. A model that works on a workstation may fail on the target controller.
This page presents ten focused research areas, degree-level project pathways, selected publications and direct support through the PIMLS biweekly members meeting.
This Computer Technology guide covers Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs), physics-guided machine learning, scientific machine learning, neural operators, hybrid models and engineering digital twins. Explore the research and project pathways below, then join the Physics-Informed Machine Learning Society to connect with the international PIMLS community.
Use available scientific knowledge to make limited data more useful, transparent and testable.
PIML can reduce repeated simulation or experimental cost while retaining the governing knowledge used in Computer Technology.
Learn uncertain parameters, closures or discrepancies around an inspectable mechanistic foundation.
Test whether structured models generalize across geometries, materials, assets, operating regimes or sites.
Use physical residuals, independent measurements, uncertainty and conventional engineering baselines before deployment.
Each card connects a meaningful Computer Technology question with suitable scientific knowledge, modelling choices and evidence needed to test it.
Important states may be inaccessible. PIML opportunities: Run stable physics-informed observers on target hardware.
Distributed devices monitor physical processes. PIML opportunities: Use local balances and sensor models with network uncertainty.
Dynamics constrain estimation and control. PIML opportunities: Deploy compact hybrid models with safety monitors.
Power, storage and thermal states interact. PIML opportunities: Use circuit/energy models for edge forecasting and control.
Vehicle and battery states need real-time inference. PIML opportunities: Embed dynamics/electrothermal models with configuration guards.
Signals arise through physiology and sensors. PIML opportunities: Use measurement/physiology models with medical safeguards.
Channels follow propagation and hardware physics. PIML opportunities: Use electromagnetic/channel priors for estimation.
Workload becomes heat and cooling demand. PIML opportunities: Use physics-consistent component models in MPC.
Degradation depends on load and environment. PIML opportunities: Use mechanism-derived indicators and uncertain life models.
Heat, occupancy and HVAC are coupled. PIML opportunities: Use energy-balance twins for monitoring/control.

Use the biweekly meeting form for research guidance.
Request accessNo. Computer Technology projects may use physics-guided features, hybrid residual models, differentiable simulators, neural operators, constrained architectures or data assimilation. State exactly what knowledge is incorporated.
Choose one engineering question, a measurable output and a defensible mechanistic baseline. Add learning only where data can identify an uncertainty or discrepancy.
A meaningful question, justified prior knowledge, deployment-level holdouts, strong baselines, ablation, uncertainty, reproducibility and honest limitations.
Simulation can broaden coverage, but simulation-only evidence cannot establish real-system accuracy. Use calibrated experiments, field measurements or trusted independent references appropriate to the claim.
